here in japan it's a saturday night. i'm james tengan in tokyo. welcome to "newsline." people in the united states are struggling to come to grips with the latest mass killing that left 26 people dead. the shooting took place at an elementary school in the state of connecticut. 20 of the dead are children, some as young as 5 years old. a gunman entered sandy hook elementary school in newtown on friday morning where he opened fire in several classrooms. more than 630 children are enrolled in the school. >> it was terrifying. i'm still terrified. i think i'm still in shock about it all.
i still don't know everything that happened. i know there were some people missing that have been taken to the hospital. >> the gunman's mother worked at the school. she was later found dead in her home. police suspect the shooter identified as 20-year-old adam lanza killed his mother and then drove her car to the school before going on the rampage. the gunman was later found dead in the school building in an apparent suicide. u.s. media say he was armed with at least two guns and was wearing a bulletproof vest. police are interviewing the gunman's family members as they try to determine his motive. president obama spoke to the nation. >> we've endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years. and each time i learn the news, i react not as a president but as anybody else would as a parent. and that was especially true today. the majority of those who died today were children.
